Does the United States Have a Patent for the Coronavirus?

United States patent #10130701B2 has many in conspiracy circles in an uproar.  It’s kind of eerie to look at when you consider what is going on in the world today.   Did the United States really grant a patent for coronavirus in 2014?

The answer is yes.  People pushing this around on the Internet are making it sound like they have found the smoking gun where the United States government unleashed a huge population control campaign or a biological weapon.

The reality is that while COVID-19 is new to the world, coronaviruses are not.  This is simply a class of virus, and they are actually quite common in our world.  So, back in 2014, a pharmaceutical company, the Pirbright Institute, did apply for a patent relating to coronaviruses.  The patent is not for the virus itself, but for the creation of one that lowers the harmful parts of the virus so that it can be used in vaccine development.

This patent is not part of the problem.  It’s part of the cure.

So, who is the Pirbright Institute?  They are a leader in research and development of things like the coronavirus.  They are currently working overtime trying to help fight COVID-19.  However, there are a lot of people in conspiracy circles trying to tie Bill Gates to Pirbright, and then making the leap in logic that Bill Gates actually owns the patent for the coronavirus.  The reality is that Gates has donated millions to the research Pirbright is doing because he believes they will be the key to eradicating this problem.

Not that we just enjoy shooting down conspiracy theories.  Take a look around our site and you will find plenty of times that we fell on the side of the conspiracy theory being valid.  This is not one of those times.  Remember, conspiracy theories analyzed with a common sense approach.

We know that not all of our readers are going to accept this explanation at face-value, and we are bracing ourselves for being called a government sham.  It wouldn’t be the first time, but the CSC continues to report the facts when we can find them.  Thanks for reading, and as always, let’s hear what you think in the comments below.  We included one video from YouTube that examines some of the possibilities we discussed above so you can see what is being said out there.
