Well, this amazing feat that only takes an hour has many people wondering if our energy problems are finally being solved right before our eyes with purely natural ingredients. The problem, of course, is that we currently rely on oil reserves all over the world as our most prevalent energy source. This oil takes so long to replenish itself that for all intents and purposes, when it’s gone, it’s gone. So, the idea that we could use algae to just create more oil perpetually would mean that we could sustain ourselves even in the face of depleting the Earth’s current reserves completely.
While this may sound like good news, it is all in the eye of the beholder, of course. For environmentalists, this is not the breakthrough they want to see. For years, there has been a rally cry to find an alternative source of energy that does not rely on crude oil supplies but at the same time is friendlier to the environment. After all, as long as we are relying on oil as our main energy source, it’s burn baby burn 24/7. Finding a way to make sure that the oil doesn’t run out is not necessarily a positive if you are looking at things from the “green routine” standpoint.
Could we actually see a moment in history when environmentalists and Big Oil are united against something?
