Government officials are adamantly declaring that New York City has safe tap water after the opening of a cafe that serves purified water to patrons. And when we say that’s what they serve, we mean just that. Nothing else. It is a cafe that exists for no reason other than to serve purified water to residents.
Molecule is the name of the cafe, and it claims that its water, treated by a custom-built purifier that cost over $25,000 to produce, is something special. It charges a whopping $2.50 for a 16-ounce glass, and it also has other options. Patrons can request their water be fortified with vitamins or mixtures of herbs, fruits, and vegetables. The machine is said to use UV rays, ozone treatments and reverse osmosis to process the water in a treatment that spans seven unique stages. The result: absolutely the purest water you can find in New York City, or anywhere else for that matter.
Critics are already calling the cafe pure nonsense. They say that Molecule’s pricey water is no safer than New York City’s own tap water, which is confirmed to be safe by more than a half a million tests each year. Public officials are driving this home, hoping that residents won’t think that the opening of a place like Molecule’s cafe signals that there is a problem. After all, before the water goes through the seven-stage treatment process, it comes from the tap, just like any other faucet in the city.
So what do you think? Would you pay for the opportunity to get a truly pure glass of water? Or do you pay it on your water bill each month already?
