Despite easily selling all the tickets to a slated show in Indonesia, Lady Gaga is backing down to the pressure of protesters, namely hard-core Muslims, who have apparently made violent threats if the concert went ahead as planned. Indonesia is a Muslim nation, but they had a moderate reputation for not being too over-the-top with Islamic ideals, and they pride themselves on free speech.
The Islamic Defenders Front doesn’t play around with their ideals, however. They were very vocal in their outrage over the planned event and branded Lady Gaga a “messenger of the devil.” They even helped sell out the event, wanting to make sure they could be inside to cause problems if the show did indeed go on. The show was already in jeopardy from the beginning. The Indonesian government in Jakarta decided to not issue the permits required for the concert to go forward, but they left the table open for negotiations if Gaga would edit her usual show to make it a little more family and Muslim friendly. Apparently there were talks going on and it was generally expected that the concert was going to be a go, but now, the plug has been pulled citing threats that don’t just involve the controversial singer but the audience as well. The stop in Indonesia was to be the biggest one of her Asian tour. Full refunds are being issued to all that purchased tickets.
