Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan, has announced that a member of the United States military went on a killing spree, shooting sixteen civilians. So far, there is no information as to what the motivation was for the killings, and nine of the victims were children. Karzai has condemned the actions and termed it as an “assassination.”
As of now, neither the United States nor NATO have confirmed the incident, despite Afghanistan’s demands for an explanation and investigation into the incident. NATO did express regret over the incident, but stopped short of taking any responsibility for it.
The shootings occurred in a village called Balandi in the Panjwaj district of southern Kandahar. A United States military base is located very nearby. Shots rung out in the wee hours of the morning around 3:00 A.M. Eyewitness reports indicate that the gunman entered three different houses to execute the victims.
