Fifty Shades of Grey — Moms Go From Sparkling Vampires to BDSM

Bestselling author E.L. James reads her smut aloud proudly.

It started out on the Internet as Twilight fans created their own fiction.  Now, it is a growing international phenomenon that landed a seven-figure book deal.  Fifty Shades of Grey is quickly securing its place as the “next Twilight” in the romance readers market.  However, you might be surprised what this demographic is latching onto.  Fifty Shades of Grey is chock full of BDSM (bondage, domination, sadism and masochism) undertones.  As a matter of fact, the novel is being referred to by many as “mommy movies that people watch for pleasure.”

The trilogy is sparking a lot of controversy, and not just for its BDSM roots.  Apparently, the novel originated by taking principal characters from the incredibly successful Twilight franchise and putting them in new situations.  Many believe that the two main characters are direct offshoots of Edward and Bella, the infamous lovers from the vampire juggernaut.  Even more are upset that someone has managed to make serious money off of something that was started off of the Internet through a collaborative work of amateurs.  Whatever the case may be, E.L. James polished the novel off and parlayed it into a million-dollar advance.

Women are latching on to Fifty Shades of Grey in droves, so much in fact that it became hard to find a copy.  Recently, a copy sold on the Internet for $999.99.  Apparently, women feel that they can read this material without the stigma of watching pornography, and they are spreading the word.  Publishers compare the word-of-mouth element to such monster successes as “The Da Vinci Code” by Dan Brown and “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert, both of which went onto become successful motion pictures.  If Fifty follows in those footsteps, it could be an interesting endeavor for filmmakers.  Sexual situations are so prevalent in the book that it may be difficult to bring it to the big screen without garnering the infamous NC-17 rating.  Those other novels became movies with major star power, garnering Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, but a novel like this may be so graphic that it may repel popular actors from wanting to get involved.  Unless, of course, they have no aversion to taking their clothes off, or engaging in BDSM-sparked scenes.

Women are actually saying that Fifty Shades of Grey is reinvigorating their sex lives and marriages with new ideas.  Apparently, there is a legion of Mom’s out there with some serious fantasies.  So, as always, we want to hear what you think?
