In a plot line seemingly taken straight from a Dan Brown novel, the heart of Saint Laurence O’Toole was stolen from Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. St. O’Toole was born in 1128, and died in 1180. He was confirmed as a Catholic Saint in 1225. It is a Catholic tradition to preserve some part of the body from saints, so the actual heart was preserved in a special container for over 900 years until it came up missing this past weekend. Believe it or not, that’s not really the strange part. There was no sign of a break-in at all, and not one other thing was missing from the cathedral. And there were plenty of valuable things readily accessible in the same area as the heart, so it makes little sense why a thief wouldn’t grab some other loot while he was at it. Awfully mysterious, huh?
Obviously, police believe that this is an inside job and will start their investigations with finding out who has access to the church. No word on whether there was any security cameras or not. We’ll keep you updated with more information as this very interesting story develops.
